Most modern openers have a force limit that trips when the load spikes. The opener senses it cannot lift the door safely and gives up — that is a protection feature doing its job.
Look at the spring on the shaft above the door. A two to three inch separation in what should be a continuous coil is the clearest confirmation you will get.
When one side loses tension, the door racks in the frame. That usually means garage door cables have slipped off the drum as well, and both need attention.
A garage door opener is built to guide a counterbalanced door, not lift a dead weight. Running it against a broken spring is how a repairable problem turns into a replacement.

Released without the proper winding bars, a fixed cone, and a controlled technique, that energy goes somewhere — typically into the hands, face, or ladder of whoever is holding the tool. Hardware-store springs are also frequently the wrong length, wire gauge, or inside diameter for the door, which leaves it out of balance and destroys the opener over the following months. What Actually Happens
We confirm the door's true weight and measure the existing spring — wire gauge, inside diameter, and length — so the replacement is sized to your door rather than to a guess.
The door is locked in position and the remaining tension is released in a controlled way with proper winding bars before anything is removed.
On a two-spring system both springs get replaced. They wore together, and reusing the survivor almost always books you a second repair within a few months.
A spring failure frequently takes the garage door cables with it. We inspect the cables and drums, re-seat what slipped, and replace what is frayed.
The door should hold position halfway up on its own. We test the balance, then verify your LiftMaster, Chamberlain, or Genie opener travels and reverses correctly under the new tension.
