What Garage Door Cables Actually Do
Your springs create the lifting force, but they never touch the door. The garage door cables are what transfer it. Each one is a braided steel line running from a bracket at the bottom of the door up to a grooved drum on the torsion shaft. As the springs unwind, the drums wind the cables in and the door rises evenly on both sides.
That means the cables live under continuous, enormous tension — and they must stay perfectly matched. If one winds a fraction differently from the other, the door starts to rack in the frame. If one lets go entirely, that whole side drops.
It is also why cable work is inseparable from spring work: the drums sit on the same shaft as the wound torsion springs. There is no way to service one safely without respecting the other.

One side of the door drops
The clearest sign of a snapped cable. One corner sits low, the door wedges diagonally in the opening, and the top section may bind hard against the track.

Cable has unspooled off the drum
Slack cable hanging loose beside the shaft, often coiled in a birds-nest. Usually caused by the door being closed onto an obstruction, letting the cable go slack and jump the groove.

Fraying or broken strands
Fuzzy, splayed wire near the bottom bracket or the drum. Once individual strands snap, the remaining ones carry more load and the countdown to full failure is short.

Rust and corrosion

Please don't run the opener on a broken cable
It is the single most expensive mistake we see. With one cable gone, the opener keeps pulling on a door that is no longer supported evenly — so it drags the door further out of square, bends track, cracks panels, and can strip the opener's own gear.
