What garage door problems do you repair?

Most repair calls come down to a handful of parts that wear out with daily use. We repair residential and commercial doors, and the work we do most often includes:

  • Broken spring replacement
  • Garage door opener repair
  • Off-track door repair
  • Roller and cable replacement
  • Safety sensor and auto-reverse repair
  • Hinge, bracket and hardware repair
  • Residential and commercial door repairs

A broken spring is the most urgent of these, so it has its own page: garage door spring repair.

Can a garage door that came off its track be fixed?

Usually, yes. A door jumps its track when a roller pops out, a cable lets go, a track gets bent or the door closes onto something in its path. Leave the door where it is and do not run the opener, because forcing it bends sections and track even further.

We secure the door first, then straighten or replace the damaged track, re-seat the rollers and check the cables and balance before the door goes back into use.

What happens when a garage door cable snaps?

The lift cables run from the bottom brackets up to the drums on the spring shaft. When one breaks, that side of the door drops and the door hangs at an angle, often wedged in the track.

We replace the cables as a pair, wind them onto the drums evenly and inspect the springs that share the same shaft. A cable rarely fails for no reason, so we also look for the worn drum, frayed strand or imbalance that caused it.

Do you offer same-day and emergency garage door repair?

Yes. Same-day service is available when the schedule allows, and the common failure parts travel on the truck, so many repairs are finished on the first visit.

If your door is stuck open, stuck shut with a car inside or hanging crooked, call and describe what it is doing. We will tell you honestly how soon we can be there.

Why is my garage door so loud?

Grinding, squealing and rattling usually point to worn rollers, dry or loose hardware or cracked hinges. Replacing worn rollers, tightening the hardware and lubricating the moving parts quiets most doors and takes strain off the opener.

If the noise is coming from the motor rather than the door, see garage door openers.

Why won't my garage door close all the way?

A door that starts down and then reverses is most often a safety sensor problem: the photo-eyes near the floor are out of line, dirty, blocked or have a damaged wire. We realign and test them and confirm the auto-reverse works as it should.

Less often the opener's travel or force settings have drifted, or the door is binding on a bent track.

Signs your garage door needs repair

Any of these means it is time to stop using the door and have it looked at.

  • A loud bang from the garage

Often a torsion spring letting go. Afterwards the door feels extremely heavy or will not lift at all.

  • The door hangs crooked

One side sitting lower than the other usually means a cable has snapped or slipped off its drum.

  • Rollers out of the track

Visible gaps between rollers and track, or a door that binds partway, point to an off-track door.

  • Grinding or scraping

Worn rollers, bent track or loose hardware make the door work harder on every cycle.

  • The door reverses before it closes

Usually the safety sensors; sometimes the opener settings or a door that is binding.

  • The opener runs but the door stays put

A stripped drive gear, a disconnected trolley or a broken spring the opener cannot lift.

Should you repair or replace your garage door?

We fix far more doors than we replace, and we tell you plainly which one makes sense.

Repair usually makes sense when

  • The problem is a spring, cable, roller, hinge or sensor
  • The sections are solid, with no cracks, rot or heavy rust
  • The door was balanced and running well before the part failed
  • It is a single failure, not a string of repeat problems

Replacement is worth considering when

  • Sections are cracked, split, rotting or badly dented
  • Repairs keep stacking up on an aging door
  • Matching replacement sections are no longer made
  • You want better insulation, quieter operation or a new look

If a new door is the better choice, see garage door installation. If the door only needs a part, we will say so.

How does a garage door repair visit work?

  1. 1

Tell us what the door is doing

Describe the symptoms when you call or send a request, so the right parts come with us.

  2. 2

    Inspect the whole system

We look at the springs, cables, drums, rollers, track, hinges, sensors and opener, not only the part that failed.

  3. 3

Explain the problem and the price

You hear what failed, what it takes to fix it and what it costs before any work begins.

  4. 4

    Make the repair

Worn parts are replaced, bent track is straightened or replaced and loose hardware is tightened.

  5. 5

    Balance and test

We check the balance by hand, run the opener through full cycles and confirm the safety reversal works.

What affects the cost of a garage door repair?

Every door is different, so a repair is priced once we have seen it. These are the main factors:

Which part failed

Realigning a sensor is a smaller job than replacing springs and cables together.

Door size and weight

Wider and heavier doors need heavier-duty springs, cables and hardware.

Damage caused by the failure

A door that was forced after a cable or spring broke can need new track, rollers or section work too.

Parts and brand

Some replacement parts are specific to the door or opener manufacturer.

Access and condition

Low headroom, rusted fasteners or earlier makeshift repairs can add time.

Every repair visit starts with a free estimate, and you approve the price before we start.

Garage Door Repair FAQ

Can I open my garage door if a spring or cable is broken?

It is safer not to. The springs and cables carry the weight of the door, so lifting it by hand or running the opener can cause injury or more damage. Leave the door where it is, unplug the opener and call us.

How long does a garage door repair take?

It depends on the part and on any damage the failure caused. Many spring, cable, roller and sensor repairs are finished in one visit because those parts travel on the truck; a part that has to be special-ordered means a second visit.

Will you replace both cables if only one snapped?

Usually, yes. Cables that were installed together have the same wear, so we replace them as a matched pair and wind them onto the drums at even tension. We explain the reason on site before any work is done.

Do you repair all garage door brands?

We work with the major door and opener brands, including Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton, Raynor, Windsor, LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie. If you are not sure what you have, tell us what is printed on the door or opener when you call.

Do you repair commercial garage doors too?

Yes. We repair residential and commercial doors, including sectional overhead doors and rolling steel doors. See commercial garage doors for the details.
